The work deserves an understudy

Every organization has people whose practical knowledge keeps the operation moving. The Understudied is being built to make that knowledge available without turning those people into full-time documentation writers.

The premise

Important processes are often underdocumented because the people who know them are busy doing them. When the business asks for a manual, those people must reconstruct the work from memory in a different tool and at a different time.

A focused recording offers a better starting point. It captures the work itself. The larger opportunity is to turn that evidence into knowledge the team can review, search, use, and update.

Why living knowledge

A guide is useful on the day it is made. A living knowledge base is designed for the days after: when the process changes, another person performs it differently, a new hire asks a narrow question, or the team discovers an exception.

The Understudied is focused on that continuing system of provenance, versions, review, answers, walkthroughs, and escalation.

What is being built now

The current work begins with a local, explicit recorder for one task at a time, optional narration, local processing, and a review workflow. Important quality, redaction, transcription, and execution tests are still underway.

That is why the public site describes a private preview rather than a finished product. Claims will follow evidence, not run ahead of it.

Who we want to learn from

We want to hear from small and mid-size operations teams that depend on a few people for recurring, practical know-how. The most useful conversations begin with a real workflow and the questions people repeatedly ask about it.

If that sounds familiar, join the preview list or write to hello@theunderstudied.com.
